Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha Laid to Rest in Enugu hometown Amid Tributes

Renowned Nigerian highlife and folklore musician, Mike Ejeagha, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, in Ezeagu Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The 95-year-old icon, celebrated for his profound influence on Igbo traditional music, passed away peacefully at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a prolonged illness. His son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed his passing, which occurred on a Friday evening.

Born on April 4, 1930, Chief Ejeagha was widely revered for his storytelling through music, with timeless classics such as “Omekagu”, “Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma”, and “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche”. His songs, deeply rooted in Igbo customs and moral teachings, captivated audiences for generations, and over 300 of his recordings are preserved in the National Archives of Nigeria.

Ejeagha’s legacy saw a recent revival when his 1983 hit, “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche”, inspired a viral dance trend on social media, reintroducing his artistry to younger Nigerians and music lovers across the globe.

His death drew widespread condolences, notably from Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who described him as a cultural treasure and one of the finest musicians of his time.

“Mike Ejeagha was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and one of the finest musicians of his generation,” the governor said. “His humility and far-reaching impact transcended borders.”

In recognition of his contributions, Governor Mbah had during Ejeagha’s lifetime renamed the Obinagu Road leading to his Abakpa Nike residence as Chief Mike Ejeagha Road—a long-awaited honour for the celebrated artist. The state government also pledged to further immortalise his legacy.

Chief Mike Ejeagha leaves behind a rich catalogue of music, a legacy of cultural pride, and a life that deeply impacted both the entertainment industry and the preservation of Igbo heritage.
