The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu will reopen for flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025. The airport was closed for emergency repairs on its runway due to a significant rupture in the asphalt surface.
According to FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, in a statement, the rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed, and the runway is cleared for landings and takeoffs. The authority apologizes for the inconvenience caused by the closure but assures the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety.
The statement reads, “However, rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed, and the runway is cleared for landings and takeoffs by the engineers working with FAAN.
“FAAN appreciates all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time. The Authority sincerely apologises for the inconvenience but assures the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety.”
The airport’s runway has undergone previous rehabilitation and extension projects, including a N10 billion project approved in 2019. The recent closure and repairs aim to ensure the safety of passengers and aircraft.
The reopening of the airport will likely bring relief to passengers and airlines, marking a return to normalcy after a brief disruption. FAAN’s prompt action in addressing the runway issue demonstrates its commitment to maintaining safety standards in Nigerian airports.
