The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu to facilitate emergency repairs on a critical section of the runway.
The development was disclosed on Saturday, April 19, in a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Obiageli Orah.
According to the statement, the closure became necessary following the discovery of a major defect on the runway that poses a significant threat to flight operations.
“There is a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway. Hence, emergency repairs will be conducted on that portion of the runway from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025,” Orah stated.
She emphasized that the decision was made in full compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations and aligns with FAAN’s broader efforts to enhance safety and upgrade aviation infrastructure across the country.
“In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has, therefore, closed the runway during this period,” she said.
“As part of FAAN’s commitment to passenger safety and the modernisation of airport facilities, the runway will not be open for landings or takeoffs during the rehabilitation period,” the statement added.
Orah also appealed to travellers and stakeholders for patience and cooperation, assuring that necessary arrangements are in place to minimize disruptions.
She confirmed that affected flights would be rerouted to nearby airports until the runway is deemed safe for operations.
