The University of Ilesa (UNILESA) in Osun State has announced the unfortunate passing of Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100-level student from the Department of Business Administration.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the University Registrar, Mr Funso Ojo, Ojolo died on Friday evening.
“The unfortunate incident occurred on the evening of Friday, April 18, 2025. Gbolahan was electrocuted while playing a game on his mobile phone, which was being charged in his room at a private hostel located near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute, PEDI junction,” the statement read, stating that “the electrocution was reportedly triggered by a lightning strike during a thunderstorm.”
The university confirmed that the Nigeria Police were immediately informed and have since commenced a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. After police clearance, the deceased’s remains were taken to the morgue of Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.
The university revealed that the father of the deceased was promptly notified and had since arrived in Ilesa, where he was received and consoled by senior university officials and the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force.
“In a show of deep concern and solidarity, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu; the Registrar, Mr Funso Ojo; the Dean of Student Affairs; the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences; the Head of the Department of Business Administration; and the Area Commander of Police were all physically present to receive and console the bereaved father,” the statement added.
UNILESA assured that it has put in place necessary arrangements to support the grieving family during this painful period, while calling for prayers for the repose of Ojolo’s soul.
