In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s technological landscape, Microsoft has announced a $1 million investment aimed at equipping one million Nigerians with Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills over the next two years. This initiative underscores Microsoft’s dedication to fostering digital literacy and innovation across the nation.
Ola Williams, Microsoft’s Country Manager for Nigeria and Ghana, unveiled the ambitious plan during a press briefing in Lagos. She emphasized that this investment is poised to transform Nigeria’s economy by nurturing a new generation of AI-savvy professionals.”Our goal is to democratize access to AI education and tools, ensuring that Nigerians are not just consumers of technology but also creators,” Williams stated.
“This investment will provide training, resources, and support to unlock the immense potential within our communities.”
The program is set to collaborate with educational institutions, technology hubs, and community centers nationwide. It will offer a blend of online and in-person training sessions, covering a spectrum of AI topics from basic introductions to advanced applications.This announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft’s previous ventures in Nigeria. Notably, in March 2022, the tech giant inaugurated its first African Development Centre (ADC) in Lagos, a $100 million investment aimed at providing software engineering solutions across Africa.
However, in May 2024, the ADC was reportedly closed, affecting over 100 engineers, due to economic challenges in the country. Despite past setbacks, Microsoft’s renewed commitment reflects a strategic focus on capacity building and sustainable development. By empowering individuals with AI competencies, the company aims to catalyze innovation, enhance employability, and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.Industry experts have lauded this initiative, highlighting the transformative potential of AI in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, finance, and education. With the right skill set, Nigerians can develop homegrown solutions to local challenges, driving progress and competitiveness on a global scale.
