A wave of fear has gripped Rivers State as a passenger boat carrying over a dozen travellers was hijacked by pirates along a major waterway. Reports indicate that 13 passengers are currently missing after the attack.
The incident occurred on Wednesday along the Andoni-Bonny waterways, a notorious stretch where criminal activities have surged in recent months. Eyewitnesses say heavily armed men intercepted the boat, forcing passengers off before speeding away with both the vessel and some of the travellers.
Local authorities and security operatives have launched a search and rescue operation to locate the missing passengers. The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the attack, stating that investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators and secure the victims’ release.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure the safe return of the missing persons,” said a police spokesperson. “Efforts are also being intensified to curb maritime crime in the region.
”This latest attack has reignited concerns over security on Nigeria’s waterways, especially in the Niger Delta region, where piracy and kidnappings have been on the rise. Residents and regular commuters along the route are calling for increased naval patrols to prevent further tragedies.
Meanwhile, families of the missing passengers are in distress, anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones. The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has also pledged to enhance surveillance and security measures along critical maritime routes.
