• Ex-lawmaker canvasses Obasa’s suspension
Newly elected Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has officially moved into the Speaker’s office, accompanied by members of the House.
The Assembly complex had tightened security, with police officers deployed both inside and outside the premises.
The development followed the recent impeachment of the former occupant, Mudashiru Obasa, who had at the weekend declared his removal as unconstitutional. Despite his stance, he was notably absent from the complex yesterday.
Meranda’s assumption of office was marked by a warm reception from her colleagues, who have rallied around her leadership.
Members were seen entering the Speaker’s office with her, signalling a collective endorsement of the new administration.
The absence of Obasa, who had promised to resume duties yesterday, has raised questions about his next step.
However, the House appears to be moving forward under Meranda’s stewardship, setting a new tone for its operations.
Observers said the transition reflects the determination of the Assembly to maintain stability and uphold its legislative duties despite the recent crisis.
Addressing newsmen on the latest development, the House’s image maker, Ogundipe Stephen, told journalists that the plenary slated for the day had been postponed to a later date to be communicated to all.
He said the postponement was to allow for better organisation.
However, a former Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, has sought Obasa’s suspension for laying claim to office.
“He (Obasa) claims that he is still the Speaker, which I think he knows that the implication is automatic suspension. I feel he should be suspended for that. It is an impersonation,” Jimoh said on a live programme, yesterday.
He continued: “How can he be the bona fide Speaker of the House? It is going to lead to his suspension. He knows its implications. He has been in the House for almost two decades. If I were to be in the House, I am going to move a motion for his suspension.”
