Willem Sander’s family has been searching for him since he went missing in November last year.
The 32-year-old’s family has expressed growing frustration over the lack of communication from police regarding the investigation into his disappearance.
Nelie Grobler, Willem’s grandmother, said they have not received any updates or leads from the police since the case was opened.
“I am old, and I can’t drive, so I can’t get to the police station by myself to find out if there is any new information,” said Grobler.
After reaching out to the police captain on January 2 for a follow-up on the case, Grobler was allegedly told by the captain that she would inform the investigating officer to visit her.
“Since then, I haven’t heard anything from either of them,” she said.
Grobler expressed her understanding that the police might be handling multiple cases but emphasised the emotional toll of being left in the dark regarding her grandson’s disappearance.
“We are deeply saddened by this. Willem’s father is in Stellenbosch, his mother is in Vereeniging, and I am here in Pretoria, so this is a difficult time for all of us, especially as we are so far apart.”
According to Willem’s mother, Adri Opperman, the case was initially opened at the Villeria police station and later transferred to the Olievenhoutbosch police station, where communication has been limited.
“We spoke to them once to find out if they received the case, and they said yes.”
She said after that they never heard anything from the police.
“I am really frustrated because we are not getting any answers, and it seems as if they don’t care.”
Willem was last seen leaving his home in Johannesburg on the afternoon of November 28.
The following day, his vehicle was discovered abandoned in a field at Mnandi in Centurion, with all his belongings still inside.
The family has urged anyone with information about Willem’s whereabouts to come forward.
