Celebrities are mourning the tragic death of Liam Payne. There has been an outpouring of love from those who worked alongside him, including his One Direction bandmates, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. In a joint statement, the men stated that they were processing “the loss of our brother.”
One of the last people closest to Liam to break their silence on his death was his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. The influencer was with Liam two days before he had fallen from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 16. The couple had been together for two years after initially meeting in the most serendipitous way.

Kate Cassidy Met Liam Payne While Working As A Waitress
Fans of Liam Payne may have been wondering how he had initially met Kate Cassidy. She was not a well-known celebrity, but a waitress working at a restaurant called Ritual in South Carolina. Just a month before his death, Kate recalled how she met the former One Direction star while taking care of him and his party in 2022. Interestingly, in her TikTok, Kate shared that she “tried everything in her power” to not work that day because she did not want to work every weekend shift. Luckily, she did and got to meet Liam, who was smitten with her.
“On the way to work my manager texted me and was like, ‘Liam Payne from One Direction is here, you’re going to be taking care of him tonight,” Kate said. She continued, “When I first approached him, I got nervous and stopped and turned around. I guess we made awkward eye contact for a second.”
“We talk about it because he said to [his friend] Conor, ‘Oh my God, did you see that girl walking over here? I’m not leaving this bar until I get her number.'”
In her TikTok, Kate shared that she gave Liam her number, but he was supposed to leave to England the next day. The two went on a date that included lunch, bowling, and even a ghost tour that went so well, Liam extended his stay in Charleston.
“He extended his flight and then extended it again the next day so he ended up in Charleston for three days. That’s the story of how we met. Literally, everything happens for a reason.” She also jokingly shared this tidbit, “Don’t get off work because you want to go to a party because you never know, you could end up meeting your future husband.”

Kate Spent Her Last Days With Liam In Argentina
Before Liam’s sudden death, he and Kate were in Argentina to support his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan, who was having a concert on October 2nd. In a TikTok, Kate stated that what was supposed to be a five-day stay in the South American nation turned out to be two weeks. She admitted that she was “so ready to leave,” adding, “Honestly, I love South America, but I hate staying in one place for too long.”
Although Kate left the country solo, Liam shared photos and videos with his girlfriend in his Snapchat Story just hours before his tragic death. In one photo, the couple made funny faces with Liam having captioned it, “Quality time.” Another photo showed a close-up of the singer’s face with the caption, “Lovely day in Argentina.”
Two days after Kate posted her TikTok announcing her departure from Argentina, news broke that Liam had died following a third-floor fall from his hotel balcony. Liam was 31.

Several celebrities took to social media to mourn Liam’s tragic passing. Those he created music with, including Zedd and Rita Ora all shared heartbreaking messages. Simon Cowell, who was one of the people responsible for creating One Direction and had known Liam since he first auditioned for The X Factor at 14, also broke his silence.
“Liam, I am truly devastated. Heartbroken. And I feel empty. And I want you to know how much love and respect I have for you. Every tear I shed is a memory of you.”
Cheryl Cole, the mother of Liam’s only surviving child, also took to social media to grieve Liam’s death. The couple dated for two years before calling it quits in 2018. They welcomed a son named Bear Grey Payne in March 2017. Cheryl called Liam’s death “earth shattering.”
One of the last people to break their silence over Liam’s death was Kate. On Friday, October 18, in an Instagram Story, she shared that she was “at a complete loss.” She also referred to Liam as “my angel.”
“Thank you for all the kind words and love that has been sent my way. I have been at a complete loss. Nothing about the past few days have felt real. I ask and pray that you’ll give me the grace and space to navigate this in private.”
“Liam, my angel. You are everything. I want you to know I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will continue to love you for the rest of my life. I love you Liam.”
The last photos Kate had shared with Liam on Instagram were in September. The couple attended the wedding of one of Kate’s closest friends.
