At the US Open this year, Aryna Sabalenka was crowned its newest champion for the first time. She defeated American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in her first Grand Slam final in New York.
Pegula settled for the runner-up finish after qualifying for her maiden Major semifinals and final on home soil. She beat Iga Swiatek 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to end the Pole’s run at the event.
American sensation Emma Navarro reached the semifinals of the US Open, losing to eventual champion Sabalenka. The 23-year-old beat Coco Gauff in the fourth round to end her hopes of defending the title.
On the other hand, Elena Rybakina withdrew from the US Open hours before her second-round match against Jessika Ponchet. The Kazakh picked up an injury that saw her end the year without reaching a Grand Slam final.
A shoulder injury forced Maria Sakkari to retire during her first-round match against China’s Wang Yafun. The Greek star was in tears as she left the court after losing the first set 6-2. Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova, on the other hand, crashed out in the second round. The Czech Republic star lost 4-6, 5-7 to Elena Gabriela Ruse.
Jasmine Paolini made sure she reached the second week of all four Grand Slam events this year. However, her run ended in the fourth round after a straight-sets loss to semifinalist Karolina Muchova.
Iga Swiatek holds on to World No. 1 spot with 7,370 points after updated WTA rankings
Iga Swiatek began the year as World No. 1 and will continue to hold the position after the completion of the final Grand Slam of the year. Despite her quarterfinal exit, she picked up 190 points after bettering her fourth-round exit from last year.
While Aryna Sabalenka came in touching distance of the top spot by winning the US Open, she added 700 points after defending 1,300 points from her last year’s runner-up finish. She has closed the gap between her and Swiatek to 2,169 points, which adds pressure on the Pole as the season heads into it’s last legs.
Jessica Pegula takes Coco Gauff‘s World No. 3 spot after the 20-year-old failed to get past the fourth round. Pegula finished as the runner-up, beating her last year’s fourth-round finish. Elena Rybakina maintained her World No. 4 ranking despite withdrawing in the second round in New York.
Jasmine Paolini began the US Open as the World No. 5 and will retain her position. Gauff, who has moved out of the Top 5, is now ranked World No. 6 following her disappointing US Open campaign. Qinwen Zheng is unmoved at World No. 7. Navarro was the biggest mover after the New York Major. The 23-year-old made it to the semifinals and has moved up four places to World No. 8.
The other movers in the WTA rankings are Barbora Krejcikova and Maria Sakkari, who have each moved one position down, taking ninth and tenth places, respectively. Anna Kalinskaya has registered a new career-high of World No. 14 while American Madison Keys, who was previously World No. 14, has dropped 10 spots after her third-round elimination.
