The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has firmly denied rumors that it cancelled the English Language paper of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
A viral press release that began circulating on social media on May 30 claimed the English exam, held two days earlier on May 28, had been annulled and would be rescheduled. The statement, allegedly from WAEC, quickly caused confusion among students, parents, and school administrators.
But in a swift response issued Tuesday, the examination body labelled the press release as fake, describing it as the handiwork of “mischief-makers” attempting to mislead the public.
“The said examination has not been cancelled,” WAEC stated in a press release signed by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina. “The management of the West African Examinations Council would like to state that the press release being circulated did not emanate from the council.”
While the origin of the forged document remains unclear, WAEC stressed that all public communications from the Council are issued exclusively through verified platforms.
“The council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute, to cause confusion and panic for candidates who sat the examination,” the statement continued.
WAEC urged candidates, schools, and the general public to rely only on its official social media accounts and accredited media channels for credible updates.
“All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office,” Adesina added.
Speculation around the exam may have been fueled by widespread reports of delays in administering the English paper on May 28.
Insiders say the delay was linked to efforts by WAEC to tackle examination malpractice, especially the recurring issue of question paper leaks.
Still, the council says it is committed to transparency and continuous improvement.
“We thank all stakeholders for the confidence reposed in us,” WAEC said. “And we promise to always seek innovative ways to render quality services to the Nigerian child.”
The 2025 WASSCE is still ongoing, with thousands of students across the country sitting for various subjects. WAEC continues to maintain that all legitimate updates will come through its official channels.
