Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled three brand-new train sets, each consisting of four coaches, for the Lagos Blue Line Rail corridor. The unveiling ceremony took place at the Iganmu Train Station, marking another milestone in the state’s efforts to enhance its mass transit system.
The new trains are expected to double passenger capacity, reduce wait times, and provide a more predictable and efficient commuting experience. Sanwo-Olu highlighted the operational benefits, including shorter intervals between train arrivals, which will now be every 10 to 15 minutes, easing congestion and boosting commuter confidence.
The governor credited the timely delivery of the trains to the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the procurement aligns with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Lagos’ THEMES Plus development blueprint. Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the state’s commitment to modernizing its transportation ecosystem and positioning Lagos as a model of sustainable urban mobility across Africa.
The governor also provided updates on the ongoing Blue Line extension project from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, which is expected to be completed by 2026. Additionally, he revealed that more rolling stock is expected for the Red Line rail corridor before the end of the year, further reinforcing the administration’s commitment to easing transportation challenges for millions of residents.
“These new trains will double our passenger capacity, reduce wait times, and deliver a more predictable, efficient commuting experience,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “Our goal is to significantly reduce journey times across Lagos and create a transport system that reflects the standard of living our citizens deserve”, he said.
The unveiling of the new train coaches is a significant step towards transforming Lagos’ transportation system, enhancing commuter experience, and promoting sustainable urban mobility. The state’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its residents are evident in this milestone achievement.
