The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh three-day weather alert forecasting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday, urging residents and stakeholders to brace for potential weather disruptions.
In its latest weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet detailed that thunderstorms and rain showers are expected across all regions—North, Central, and South—between June 3 and 5, with possible strong winds and safety risks accompanying the storms.
The forecast highlights a pattern of early morning thunderstorms over northern states, including Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano on Monday. Later in the day, the rains are expected to continue in Sokoto, Taraba, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara.
The pattern is expected to persist into Tuesday and Wednesday, with additional northern states such as Yobe, Adamawa, and Zamfara also expected to be affected.
Residents in the North-Central region—including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Benue—are advised to prepare for persistent rainfall throughout the three-day period. Thunderstorms are anticipated during both morning and evening hours, potentially leading to flooding in low-lying areas.
NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms, increasing the risk of falling trees and flying debris. The agency advised the public to secure loose outdoor items, avoid driving in heavy rain, and unplug electrical appliances during storms.
“Stay away from tall trees to avoid injury from falling branches,” the advisory warned. “Airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather updates from NiMet for operational safety.”
