Kano residents joined Muslims worldwide in observing Eid-el-Kabir prayers on Friday, ushering in the festive period marked by the traditional sacrifice of animals. However, this year’s celebrations took a unique twist as the city’s two rival emirs—Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II—presided over separate prayer gatherings.
Bayero, whose reinstatement followed a contentious court ruling, performed his Eid prayers at the Nassarawa mini palace. The session was led by Sarkin Malamai, Malam Kamalu Inuwa, who in his sermon emphasized the virtues of sacrifice, patience, and unity as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim. He encouraged worshippers to remain committed to their faith and moral duties.
Meanwhile, Emir Sanusi II, recently restored to the throne by the Kano State Government, led a massive congregation at the Kofar Mata Central Eid Ground. He was joined by top officials, including Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, commissioners, and traditional leaders.
In his address, Sanusi called for collective action against insecurity and youth violence, particularly the growing threat of thuggery.
“Violence and disunity have no place in Kano,” he stated. “We must work together with security agencies to preserve the peace our ancestors built.”
He also highlighted the role of parenting in curbing crime, urging families to instill discipline and moral values in their children.
Despite the parallel ceremonies, the festivities proceeded peacefully, with heightened security across major prayer venues. The contrasting gatherings underscore the lingering emirate dispute, as both leaders assert their legitimacy amid ongoing legal and political tensions.
