Kano Government Reacts To The De@th Of Athletes In Road Crash While Returning From National Sports Festival

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle carrying about 35 passengers, mainly athletes and officials, fell off a bridge, resulting in a devastating crash.

The Kano State government has expressed its deepest condolences to the athletes and officials involved in the road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

We had earlier reported that the devastating accident claimed the lives of at least 19 members of the Kano State contingent who were returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State. 

It was learnt that the incident occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2025, around 9am in the Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle carrying about 35 passengers, mainly athletes and officials, fell off a bridge, resulting in a devastating crash. 

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, expressed deep sorrow over the accident, describing it as a “deeply painful moment for all of us.”

In an official statement, Kwankwaso stated, “We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment.”

The Commissioner assured the public that the government stands firmly with the affected individuals and will ensure they receive the necessary medical attention and support.



“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano,”
he added.

Kwankwaso also appreciated the efforts of first responders and medical personnel attending to the victims, assuring the public that a full report of the incident would be received and appropriate actions taken.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State government to the welfare and safety of all athletes and officials who represent the state in national and international sporting engagements.

The government has promised to do everything possible to prevent such incidents in the future and support those affected by this tragedy.
