Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said that the present economy being run by the presidency cannot survive without borrowing from the international economic system.
Kalu made this statement when he was featured in an interview on Channels Television on the programme Politics Today on Monday.
Kalu, a senator representing Abia North, also said that the National Assembly is not a ‘rubber-stamped’ one, as every law passed by lawmakers must have passed through due process.
He said, “There’s no law made under the NASS that did not take its course.”
On the issue of the nation’s state of the economy, he said that for the nation to move on, we must borrow from the outside world; otherwise, the nation would collapse.
He said, “If this economy did not borrow, it would collapse, that’s the truth. The Committee on foreign debts and local debts used to scrutinise a lot, and I am not a member of that committee.
“You know, these jobs are done at the Committee level. I have just told you that any law made has taken its course, and I am satisfied.
The former Abia State governor also stated that many Nigerians are expecting the legislature and executive to be at loggerheads, but that’s not maturity.
He said, “What you people want to see is that we are fighting with the executive, but we are adults. For the interest of Nigerians, we have the mechanism to safeguard that fight. There are a lot of Bills that we sent back.
“We are mature; we don’t have to come telling you that we are fighting… If we look at this one, we say ‘Yes, it would work’ and ‘No’. You saw what happened in the tax Bill; it took its course well. Actually, the day we passed the Tax Bill, I went to Akpabio’s house to congratulate him.”
