Kogi State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called on the Kano State Government to immortalise the 21 Kano State athletes and officials who tragically lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
In a statement signed and released on Sunday by the Acting Kogi SWAN Secretary, Olatunde Odimayo, the incident is both tragic and painful. While consoling the families of the bereaved for their irreplaceable loss, the sports body also extended its condolences to the Kano State Government and SWAN in the state during this difficult period.
“We are deeply traumatised by this tragic incident. Information reaching us indicates that these individuals were young, vibrant, and promising, determined to make Kano State proud both nationally and internationally.
“Our hearts go out to their families during this trying time.
“SWAN Kogi is using this platform to urge the Kano State Government to, as a matter of urgency, immortalise these fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for the interest of the state,” the statement partly read.
Recall that 21 members of the Kano State contingent at the recently concluded 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, tagged the “Gateway Games,” were involved in a road crash while returning home from the competition on Saturday.
