Benue CAN Seeks God’s Intervention, Rejects Calls For Emergency Rule

The Benue State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep worry over the ongoing massacre, destruction, and displacement of thousands of citizens due to herdsmen attacks. In response, CAN organized a prayer summit for the Christian community in the state, seeking God’s intervention in the crisis.

The state Vice Chairman of CAN, Rev. Jonathan Terwase Ugbede, lamented the massive killings of people by herders and the attacks on communities in various local government areas. He noted that only God can save the people of Benue from the cruel hands of the insurgents and appealed to Christians to offer relentless prayers for God’s intervention.

He was Speaking during a prayer summit in the state. The state Vice Chairman of CAN, Rev. Jonathan Terwase Ugbede, decried the massive killings of people by the herders and the attacks on communities including that of Logo, Kwande, Ukum, Agatu, Apa, Buruku, Gwer West and Guma Local Government areas among others.

Support for Governor Alia
Rev. Ugbede appreciated Governor Hyacinth Alia for his proactive approach to addressing insecurity in the state, citing the establishment of the “Anyam Nyor” security outfit as evidence of the governor’s determination to deal with insecurity. CAN has distanced itself from calls for emergency rule in the state and has no hand in the call for the governor’s removal.

The immediate past Chairman of CAN, Rev. Dr. Augustine Akpen Leva, told Christians that only God can save them and appealed to the people to leave their evil ways and come to Him with remorse. He emphasized the importance of embracing virtues like love, unity, and avoiding everything that can divide society.

The prayer summit, organized throughout the state, emphasized the desperation and frustration of the people of Benue in the face of ongoing violence and insecurity. As CAN seeks God’s intervention, it also calls on the people to support Governor Alia’s efforts to address insecurity and promote peace and stability in the state.
