In an emotional visit on Thursday, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum announced a full scholarship package for the children of eight Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members who lost their lives in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast along the Dikwa-Marte Road earlier this week.
The tragic incident, which occurred, claimed the lives of the local security volunteers who had been helping in counter-insurgency efforts across the state. Their deaths mark yet another painful chapter in the region’s long-running battle against insurgent threats.
Governor Zulum visited the families of the fallen CJTF members in Fezzan ward, Maiduguri, to personally offer condolences and support. Addressing the grieving families, he declared immediate financial relief and long-term educational assistance.
“I want to announce an initial assistance of N5 million to be given to each of the families to take care of their immediate needs,” the governor stated. “In addition, the Borno State Government will provide full scholarship to all the children of the deceased CJTF members. For those without children, we will ensure other close family members receive necessary support.”
Describing the men as martyrs who laid down their lives for the safety of their communities, Zulum praised their courage and pledged that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. “They died defending their people. Their bravery will forever be etched in our collective memory,” he said, offering prayers for the departed and strength to their families.
Governor Zulum was accompanied on the visit by top state officials, including Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Askira; APC State Chairman, Bello Ayuba; and Permanent Secretary of Government House, Mustapha Ali Busuguma.
The CJTF, a local security outfit formed to aid military efforts against Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents, has been a critical part of community defense in Borno. While their contributions have often come at great personal risk, Thursday’s gesture from the governor was a solemn recognition of their unwavering commitment.
As Borno continues its long road to peace and stability, the loss of these men is a stark reminder of the human cost of security—but also of the resilience and solidarity that define the people of the state.
