Now that Chicago Med is in the midst of airing its 10th season, many fans feel that the TV show isn’t as good as it once was. With that in mind, it seems clear that the team behind Chicago Med should be doing everything they can to make the medical drama great again. While that may seem like an impossible task, there is a specific reason to think that isn’t the case.
There is a Chicago Med storyline in the past that, if brought back properly, could bring the show back to the glory it once enjoyed. As great as that is, the most important news is that the actor who would need to be involved has expressed support for the storyline being brought back.
April Sexton Returning To Chicago Med As A Doctor Could Make The Show Great Again
Unfortunately for Chicago Med fans, it is widely agreed among the show’s viewers that it has gone downhill over the years. Worse yet, the truth is that turning a show around once it has begun to slide in quality can be extremely difficult, to say the least.
Despite that, there is a reason to believe that it is possible that the reintroduction of a departed Chicago Med character could turn things around. To be more specific, bringing Yaya DaCosta back as April Sexton could bring Chicago Med back to its glory days.
While talking about the current state of the show, Chicago Med fans typically name two reasons why the show has gone downhill.
First off, Chicago Med has lost most of its characters that fans were the most invested in. Secondly, some of Chicago Med’s storylines have been panned by the show’s viewers.
While both of those issues are big problems, there are strong arguments that bringing April Sexton back as a doctor could solve both of the issues with Chicago Med.

Considering the possibilities, fans should consider if it would make sense for April to become a doctor.
Throughout April Sexton’s six-season tenure as one of Chicago Med’s main characters, fans of the show learned a lot about the character. In addition to learning about April’s personal life, fans saw how much medical expertise the character had.

When April’s brother, Dr. Noah Sexton, began working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, it was often obvious that she knew more than he did. While most Emergency Room nurses are highly knowledgeable, April seemed to be a much better fit to be treating patients as a doctor than her brother.

During Chicago Med Season 8, Yaya DaCosta returned to the show when her character married Dr. Ethan Choi. However, Yaya had previously left the show and stopped being one of the main characters at the end of Season 6.
During Season 6 of Chicago Med, April worked tirelessly to help patients through the COVID-19 pandemic. Through that experience, April came to the conclusion that she wanted to have more authority to treat patients. As a result, April’s character stopped working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center so she could go back to school to become a nurse practitioner.
As every Chicago Med will likely already know, as a character, April is extremely dedicated to her career. As a result, it makes sense that April would be willing to work hard to put in the work to go from being a nurse to a nurse practitioner.
The Cleveland Clinic describes a nurse practitioner as someone who can treat patients in many of the ways that doctors can. “A nurse practitioner (NP) is a nurse who has advanced clinical education and training. NPs share many of the same duties as doctors. They perform physical exams, diagnose and treat diseases and other health conditions, and prescribe medication. A nurse practitioner must have a graduate-level degree of education.”
Furthermore, even though nurse practitioners don’t often become doctors in real life, that definitely seems like the kind of leap that April would take as a character.
Yaya DaCosta Expressed Support For Returning To Chicago Med As A Doctor
In July 2023, Yaya DaCosta was interviewed by TV Insider about her Chicago Med past. As a part of that interview, Yaya DaCosta expressed that she would be interested in returning to Chicago Med under one condition.

“I always thought April was going to finish her schooling and become a doctor. … I think the idea was always that we would kind of tap into some woman’s empowerment and now that he was all set, go back to her fulfilling her dream, and I guess just as time went on, everyone was comfortable seeing her as a nurse. The way that she was in the hospital, the way that she interacted with the patients, the wisdom that she brought to the cases, the way that the doctors could trust her to just finish their sentences and start doing what was needed before they’re even asked, I think that kind of gave her a lot of credibility and expectation that she would be a doctor. So if ever in this or any other dimension, April Sexton were to return to screen, it would have to be as a doctor. “
As for the hope that Brian Tee would return to portray April’s husband, Dr. Ethan Choi, it seems like there could be a chance. While talking to TV Line in June 2024, Brian expressed interest in a possible Chicago Med acting return if it was alongside his former co-stars like Yaya.
“There’s always conversation [about] returning on screen… So we’ll always start that conversation, and if the right time or the right storyline comes along, maybe it might happen. So it’s kind of one of those things that you never say goodbye to…. I think probably the hospital needs help. Some kind of tragedy is about to happen, some kind of major catastrophe drama,” he pitches, “and maybe they bring back myself and Will Halstead and April and bring back some of the old crew to kind of fix things to what it was.”
Considering Brian might be interested in returning if Yaya did, that is further proof that April returning as a doctor has a lot of potential for Chicago Med.
