The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that the arrest of popular social media personality Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, followed multiple petitions accusing him of cyberstalking.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale disclosed the development during a media briefing on Monday, stating that the arrest was prompted by “a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners.”
He emphasized that the Commission’s actions were in line with due process. “We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners. We will release him once he meets the bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible; we are law-abiding,” Oyewale said.
Addressing speculation about a possible connection to Guaranty Trust Bank, Oyewale clarified that the complaints came from various individuals and had no ties to any financial institution. “The petitions were from different individuals, and we owe them a duty of protection,” he explained.
The case underscores growing concerns about cyberstalking and online harassment in Nigeria’s increasingly digital public space. The EFCC noted that plans are underway to arraign Otse in court, reinforcing its commitment to upholding the law and safeguarding citizens from digital misconduct.
