President Donald Trump has officially commuted the federal sentence of Larry Hoover, the infamous founder of Chicago’s Gangster Disciples.
Hoover, who was locked up at the notorious ADX Florence supermax prison in Colorado, had been serving six life sentences on federal racketeering charges.
According to Hoover’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, the commutation only applies to his federal time. Hoover is still serving a 200-year state sentence tied to a 1973 murder conviction in Chicago and will likely be transferred to an Illinois prison to continue serving that time.
Ron Safer, the former lead prosecutor on Hoover’s federal case, told news outlet ABC7, “I believe in redemption… but some crimes are so heinous, so notorious, they’re not deserving of mercy.”
In 2021, Kanye West hosted a “Free Larry Hoover Benefit Concert” at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The event saw Ye and Drake set aside their long-standing feud to spotlight the incarceration of Hoover, and it was globally broadcast via Amazon Prime Video.
