The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives returned with a brand-new season as fans got an update on MomTok, a group of Mormon women influencers, based in Utah. Fans are well aware that this group of ladies like to stir the pot with their infamous game, “Truth Box,” a game where they read anonymous questions about one another that really never ends well.
In Season 2 of the Hulu reality TV show, viewers saw MomTok play a different game while on a group trip to New Orleans. In Episode 9, Layla Taylor introduces a spontaneous game of “pregnancy roulette,” where each woman agrees to take a pregnancy test, just for fun. But what begins as a lighthearted moment quickly spirals into chaos, leaving Demi Engemann in tears.

Layla Taylor Has MomTok Play A Pregnancy Test Roulette Game That Backfires
In Episode 9 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Season 2, the ladies make their way to New Orleans, Louisiana for what should be a fun-filled MomTok trip. Their first night includes dinner with a private chef to taste authentic New Orleans cuisine and a shocking trip to a Burlesque show. The next morning, Layla Taylor decides to play a new game with MomTok that isn’t the dreaded “Truth Box” — she surprises the ladies with a pregnancy test in a game she calls “Pregnancy Roulette.” Layla shares that she wants to play because she might be pregnant.
Before the women take the tests, Demi Engemann turns to the group and says, “This is a cruel game. What if someone is pregnant, and it’s not me?” She and her husband, Brett Engemann, have been struggling to conceive for years, making this moment especially sensitive, and, for Demi, even painfully cruel.
In a confessional, she shares, “I feel like I’m going to throw up it’s like evoking all of these emotions in me and triggering to my core. My least favorite thing to do is to take a pregnancy test.”
Despite Demi’s feelings, MomTok goes ahead and takes the tests. They are then put in a bowl where each woman picks up a test to reveal whether it’s a positive or negative result. As Mikayla Matthews picks one up, it reveals a positive test result, and the women are shocked. However, viewers already know that Mayci Neeley is pregnant. She had chosen not to tell MomTok, yet.
In a very emotional scene, Demi goes next and reveals another positive pregnancy test. However, knowing that it could be any of the ladies, she breaks down in tears. MomTok gathers around Demi because this is especially triggering for her. Two people are pregnant, and she may not be the one with the surprising news.
The game is no longer fun because not only does it seem incredibly hurtful to Demi, Mayci did not want to announce her pregnancy this way. “Now, it almost feels like a bad thing to be pregnant in this situation,” she shares. As the episode unfolds, we learn that Mikayla is one of the two women who received a positive test result. While only Mayci knows about Mikayla’s pregnancy, she later confides in Mikayla privately and reveals that she, too, is expecting.
Mikayla and Mayci both tell Demi that it’s them who are pregnant. Demi admits to feeling “bad” for how she reacted. “I’m feeling so stupid and so bad that I made that moment about myself,” she told the cameras.

Fans Found The Pregnancy Roulette Scene Heartbreaking And Cruel
Despite Demi emerging as the “villain” of the season—targeting Jessi Ngatikaura’s hair business, attempting to cut her from the show for a bigger paycheck, and even trying to push Taylor Frankie Paul out of MomTok—this particular scene is undeniably heartbreaking.
In a Reddit thread that discussed Episode 9, viewers all agreed that it was cruel to see MomTok play a pregnancy roulette game knowing that Demi and Brett had been trying to conceive for four years with no success. Many fans expressed frustration that none of the MomTok women spoke up to stop the game, despite Demi openly acknowledging how painful and triggering it would be for her.
“I don’t care how you feel about Demi this season but knowing you’re pregnant and knowing she struggles with infertility and then playing pregnancy roulette is just really f****** mean. No one deserves the pain of infertility. My heart broke for her,” a comment read.
“Came here bc WHY THE F*** AREN’T WE MAD AT LAYLA FOR SUGGESTING THIS WHEN SHE KNOWS DEMI IS STRUGGLING W INFERTILITY?!! Who the f*** takes pregnancy tests as a fun lowkey parlor game?? —Producers, that’s who. Such an elegant yet ridiculous plot device for revealing pregnancies and triggering a tearful breakdown. That was upsetting,” another person wrote.
Another commenter questioned whether it “was production’s idea,” a theory that seems plausible given the show’s reputation for manufacturing drama.
In response to the backlash surrounding the “pregnancy roulette” game, Layla eventually spoke out about her decision to go through with it. Her explanation, however, may not come as a surprise to fans.

Layla Taylor Reveals The Pregnancy Game Wasn’t Her Idea
It seemed that those same Redditors may have been right about producers potentially encouraging Layla to play such a cruel game with MomTok. When a commenter asked Layla in a TikTok, “the pregnancy test roulette tho.” She gave a very simple answer that shut down any narrative suggesting she was being manipulative.
The season not only followed Demi revealing her struggles with fertility, but a rumor that her husband was unfaithful. In an episode, Mayci revealed that she received an anonymous tip on social media that Brett had slept with someone when Demi was away. Demi defended her marriage, stating that she wasn’t apart from Brett for more than five days, if that. However, after the two were seen together at a store, she questioned why her husband was so defensive about the accusation. In a moment where cameras weren’t rolling, but their microphones were still on, Brett shared:
“Are we on the same page here? You have to know deep in your core that I would never do that to you,” Bret said. “It bothers me. I want to find out who it was. I want to know who said it because I want to go after them. It pisses me off. You know I didn’t do that.”
She is then heard telling him, “I don’t know what it is with you. Why do we keep talking about it? The way you are reacting is a little bit confusing. If I am guilty, this is how I am acting.”
All ten episodes of The Secrets Lives of Mormon Wives Season 2 can be streamed on Hulu.
