Former Ogun State Governorship aspirant, Segun Sowunmi has called on the People Democratic Party (PDP) to bring back Peter Obi from the Labour Party (LP).
Sowunmi made the call on Wednesday during an interview on Arise TV News, urging the PDP to have Obi back ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“With due respect, Peter is at liberty to do whatever he thinks is in his best interest before we get the impression that anybody is forcing him, pushing him, dragging him or pulling him,” Sowunmi said.
“What are the potential advantages for Peter before we then get to the potential advantages for the PDP? This is because the party, in my opinion owes a south-eastern debt.
“Sir Alex Ekueme, one of the drivers and founders of the PDP dragged the Igbos into the party, he tried to be president in 1999 but came short in the primaries. However, the Igbos have been very consistent and passionate about the party.
“Every time the Igbos supported us in the PDP, we never struggled. Also, Peter Obi will get agents at every polling unit during the 2027 presidential.election.”
Sowunmi added that the PDP needs to try to bring back the Labour Party standard bearer in the 2023 presidential election, Obi, into its fold.
“One of the people who was a PDP member, a South eastern man who felt based on the balance of play that the South-East was excluded, Peter Obi, was allocated 6.2 million votes, you lose the election, you run to the Supreme Court you lose, at least you were adjudged to have lost,” Sowunmi said.
‘’Any deep-thinking, fair-minded Nigerian man who is in the political party called the PDP ought to know that the greatest, necessary next step is to have the conversation about: ‘How do you bring Peter back’ now that the energy driving him is organic.”
Obi defected from the PDP in May 2022 to the LP, after the former Governor of Anambra State reportedly complained about massive bribing of delegates and vote buying during the party’s presidential primaries.
He also cited the existence of a party clique collaborating against him, following which former Vice President Atiku Abubakar won the PDP primaries ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
