The South African Police Service (SAPS) recently published crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year (October to December 2024), which indicate decreases in contact crimes for both Pretoria Central and Sunnyside police stations.
While the figures indicate positive steps forward, these two suburbs remain among several Pretoria suburbs identified as crime hotspots due to elevated incidents of serious crimes.
In Sunnyside, the most notable offences include sexual offences, attempted murders, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), common assault, and common robbery.
In Pretoria Central, the most notable crimes are common robbery, robbery with aggravating circumstances, common assault, and contact crimes.
Here’s a look at the crime patterns recorded at these stations.
Pretoria Central
Pretoria Central Police Station reported a 31.6% decrease in contact crimes, including significant reductions in common robbery and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Murder decreased by 4 counts (8 cases reported last quarter to 4), sexual offences decreased by 5 counts (27 to 22) and attempted murder decreased by 3 counts (12 to 9).
Common robbery recorded a 50.7% decrease (140 down to 60), followed by a 30.1% decrease in common assault cases reported (156 to 109) and robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 29.5% (132 down to 93).
Assault with intent to cause GBH decreased by 12.4% (97 cases to 85).
Rape decreased by 2 counts (21 to 19), sexual offences decreased by 4 counts (6 to 2) and a single contact sexual offence was reported this quarter compared to none in the previous two.
No attempted sexual offences have been reported in the past four quarters.
Robbery at residential premises decreased by 2 counts (2 to 0), while robbery at non-residential premises decreased by 3 counts (8 to 5) and carjacking increased by a single count (11 to 12).
No CIT heists, bank robberies or truck hijackings have been reported in the past three quarters.
A single arson case was reported in this quarter and the previous, while malicious damage to property decreased by 26 counts (58 down to 32).
Kidnappings saw a rise of 5 counts (14 up to 19), as did burglary at non-residential premises (29 up to 34).
Burglary at residential premises decreased by 13 counts (26 to 13), and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases reported decreased by 26.9% (216 down to 158).
Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by 13.0% (46 up to 52), and no stock theft cases have been reported in the past five quarters.
Crimes detected by police increased significantly by 34.6%, which included 62 more counts of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs.
Sunnyside
Sunnyside Police Station recorded an overall 10.4% decrease in contact crimes, with robbery with aggravating circumstances decreasing by 30.6% (157 down to 109).
Common robbery decreased by 10.8% (111 to 99), common assault decreased by 2.2% (137 to 134), and attempted murder decreased by 2 counts (29 to 27).
Assault with GBH increased by 8 counts (24 up to 32), attempted murder is up by 7 counts (3 to 10) and two more cases of murder were reported this quarter compared to 1 in the last.
No attempted sexual offences or contact sexual offences were reported in the previous two quarters.
Rape cases increased by 3 counts (20 up to 23) and sexual assault cases decreased by 5 counts (9 to 4).
Robbery at residential premises decreased by 6 counts (12 to 6) and at non-residential premises decreased by 11 counts (15 to 4).
Three more counts of carjacking were reported this quarter (17 up to 20) and no CIT heists, bank robberies or truck hijackings were reported in the previous two quarters.
No arson or stock theft cases have been reported in the past five quarters and malicious damage to property cases decreased by 9 counts (48 to 39).
Burglary at residential and non-residential premises decreased by 45 (65 down to 20) and 16 counts (26 down to 10), respectively.
Reported theft of motor vehicle or motorcycle cases decreased by 21.8% (87 cases to 68), and theft out of or from motor vehicles increased by 10.8% (158 up to 175).
Crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 42.1%.
Similarly to Pretoria Central, the bulk of these came from DUI cases detected, which recorded a 68.7% (134 up to 226).
