Lagos APC okays indirect primaries for selection of candidates
The Akweno of Kweme Kingdom in Badagry, Oba Sejiro James, has called on his daughter, Damilola James, to withdraw from the local council election as Chairman of the Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
The monarch urged his daughter and other aspirants, particularly from his home Ward A to step aside in the interest of equity and fairness.
Damilola, a strong contender for the chairmanship seat, received this advice during a recent visit to the palace by another aspirant, Oluremi Ajose, daughter of Oba Oyekan Ajose Possi III, who had earlier sought the monarch’s royal blessings for her ambition.
Oba James, who spoke during the visit on April 16, 2025, emphasised that the royal fathers’ decision to back Ajose stems from a collective commitment to fairness and justice among the five wards that make up Badagry West LCDA.
He said that since the creation of the council during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State Governor, Wards A, B, and D have each produced a chairman, adding that Wards C (Apa Ward) and E (Seme Ward), however, had not been given the same opportunity.
MEANWHILE, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has announced adoption of indirect primaries in the selection of the party’s chairmanship and councillorship candidates for the poll.
In the guidelines jointly signed by its state Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi and Secretary, Adeola Jokomba, yesterday, the party said that the elections would be by indirect primaries without consensus.
The party further noted that “all accredited party delegates must present their APC membership cards, and corresponding PVCs linked to their local council ward,” adding that “delegates shall vote for the candidates of their choice through an indirect primary system.”
It said that canvassing at the election venue is prohibited, stating that no party official at any level shall serve as a polling agent or electoral officer, among many other general provisions for the elections.
The party primaries are scheduled on May 10.
