The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has taken decisive action against internal dissent, suspending its former chairman, Pastor Dayo Ekong, alongside other high-ranking officials over allegations of anti-party activities and constitutional violations. The move signals a sweeping restructuring effort amid escalating tensions within the party’s ranks.In a statement issued by the state’s caretaker committee, the party revealed the immediate suspension of Ekong, its ex-chair, and Sam Okpala, a prominent member, for six months.
Additionally, all Local Government and Ward Executive Committees appointed under Ekong’s tenure were dissolved, with their members similarly suspended for half a year.
The caretaker committee, led by Chairman Rotimi Odunaike and Secretary Dorcas Omorodion, accused Ekong of “gross misconduct” for simultaneously holding the roles of Lagos State Chairman and National Financial Secretary—a direct violation of the party’s constitution.
The statement emphasized that such dual officeholding undermined governance and accountability.“Pastor Mrs. Dayo Ekong is hereby suspended for six months for breaching the party’s constitution and failing to uphold its values,” the declaration read.
“All members of the former state executive committee are likewise suspended for anti-party activities and dereliction of duty.”
The purge extends beyond top-tier leadership. Local and ward committees across Lagos, appointed during Ekong’s administration, were disbanded effective immediately. The caretaker committee condemned these bodies for “colluding in activities detrimental to the party’s integrity,” though specifics of the alleged misconduct were not disclosed.
This shake-up follows months of internal strife within the Lagos LP, which has struggled to maintain cohesion amid Nigeria’s volatile political climate. The caretaker committee framed the suspensions as a necessary step to “restore discipline and adherence to democratic principles.”
Political analysts suggest the move aims to consolidate power ahead of future elections, with the caretaker body now tasked with overseeing fresh leadership appointments. However, the suspended members have yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
As the Labour Party navigates this turbulent phase, the fallout raises questions about its stability in Lagos, a key battleground in Nigerian politics.
The caretaker committee has pledged to “rebuild trust” and enforce stricter compliance with party rules moving forward.
