Learners from Lehlabile Secondary School were encouraged to work hard and become the best-performing institution in terms of matric results.
This message was from former learners who came to the school to donate full school uniforms for 46 learners.
They also donated two blazers for two Grade 11 learners.
Chairperson of Lehlabile Alumni Association, Advocate Lekau Dibakwane, said the donations form part of the group’s responsibilities.
Dibakwane said the alumni is not just a registered charity group yet.
“This gesture forms part of our mandate to assist the school where we can.
The reason we have chosen Grade 11 learners is that next year they will be here and serve as an example to other learners that hard work pays off.”
Dibakwane said they must also work hard if they want to be awarded bursaries as well.
He encouraged learners to take their schoolwork seriously and strive to perform exceptionally well in their studies.
The alumni donate school uniforms annually to the school, including socks, trousers, skirts, shirts, jerseys and ties.
“We are 183 members who started a WhatsApp group around 2020, some coordinating former school members, but activities escalated to actions that you see today.
“One of its purposes is to assist Lehlabile High School with projects encouraging learners to do well in their studies, particularly matriculants,” said Dibakwane.
He said many of the members donated R110 over time since January this year to make this project a reality.
“We are happy that we are making a difference in the lives of the learners, who cannot afford to secure school uniforms and strongly believe that the uniform will improve their performance,” he said.
Dibakwane said the alumni intended to build a hall for the school and tackle any other development issues at the school.
School principal Fannie Kubjane said the donations came at the right time.
“What the alumni have done for us is very much imperative because most of our learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds. These goodies will put us in good stead to help needy learners at our school.”
Kubjane said the uniforms will encourage learners to look forward to coming to school every day and improve their studies.
Chairperson of the school governing body, Caroline Sebesho, said that parents are celebrating the donations given to the school by the alumni.
Sebesho said the uniforms and the messages they received from the alumni members will go a long way.
“The full school uniforms will also keep learners warm throughout the winter season with the jerseys, socks and trousers,” said Sebesho.
The school thanked representatives of the association for the donations.
The staff concluded that the school is humbled and appreciates the efforts and initiatives of the group for making such an impactful programme that contributes to meaningful learning.
