Suspected bandits have reportedly killed five operatives of the Community Watch Corps, CWC, during a deadly ambush in Maharba Village, Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Among those killed during the incident was CWC commander, Malam Sanusi.

Report said the personnel were on a reinforcement mission when they were ambushed at a stream crossing by about 20 armed bandits on motorcycles.

Confirming the attack, Ibrahim Kaula, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dikko Radda, said the terrorists concealed themselves in nearby mango trees and later set the security team’s Hilux vehicle ablaze.

Meanwhile, the governor vowed to review the security architecture in the state and deal with the terrorists.

He made the promise when he led a high-level security delegation to the area for an on-the-spot assessment.

Addressing journalists, Mr Radda described the attack as “a heartbreaking loss to the state” and pledged to strengthen security measures.

The governor also met with affected residents and assured that such an ugly incident will not repeat itself.

He pledged continued collaboration with security agencies and community stakeholders to enhance intelligence gathering and operational response.

The delegation also prayed for the souls of the fallen operatives and comfort for their families.

According to him, the assessment will enable the government to adopt further strategies to protect the lives and property of members of the communities.

In his remarks, the commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Danmusa, emphasised that the visit was part of a broader strategy to better understand the evolving nature of banditry and to devise stronger countermeasures.

“This visit is critical for deploying new tactics to safeguard our communities, especially in high-risk areas,” he said.

He also appealed to residents of the state to support the government with prayers and exercise patience as it strives to restore peace in the state.
