A founding member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Farouk Adamu Aliyu, said there is no way Nigeria would become a one-party state.
Aliyu, in an interview on Arise TV on Tuesday, remarked that suggestions by the APC national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, that Nigeria should emulate China’s model of one-party state remain his personal view and not that of the APC.
The Jigawa-born politician noted that it is in the best interest of Nigerians if the country operates a multiparty democratic system.
“A one-party state is certainly not the best for us. The APC is not looking towards a one-party. What Ganduje just said was his opinion. It is not the opinion of the party, even though he’s our leader,” he said.
Acknowledging that the ultimate power to choose elective office holders remains with the electorates, he said there is nothing wrong with the ongoing gale of defection by governors and state and national assembly members to the APC fold.
He said the APC is not unaware of the effort by the coalition led by the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 poll.
