Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and member of the Board of Trustees, Bode George, says the main opposition party has been “resurrected” following the long-awaited National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held Tuesday in Abuja.
George, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, dismissed persistent rumours that the PDP was going down, calling the party an “iroko tree” with deep political roots.
“We have already done the resurrection today. An iroko tree doesn’t die, this party is an iroko tree because the tap root is so deep,” George said.
The NEC met on Tuesday for the first time in more than a year; the last meeting was on April 18, 2024. Attempts to bring the PDP’s highest decision-making body back together had been repeatedly derailed by internal strife and leadership disputes, which led to numerous postponements and public disputes between party leaders.
“The PDP NEC meeting was the realisation of the failures and things that we have done. This party is not a party for one individual, no individual can claim ownership of this party,” he said.
George also claimed that some politicians have strayed from the party’s founding fathers’ ideals and accused them of being self-centred.
“We have learnt a lesson and that lesson was the beginning of the meeting yesterday and today. What it reminded me was the peak of our existence as a political party. I left the chambers feeling reinvigorated,” he said.
George disclosed that Adolphus Wabara, the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), urged PDP members to be selfless rather than selfish.
“We must perpetually build on selfless leaders. We must have more selfless leaders and less selfish leaders. That was resonating and what he said today,” George added.
