An October 2022 Us Weekly article featured quotes from Jessica Radloff ‘s book, “The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.” One of the quotes from the book featured Mayim revealing that she rinsed her mouth out with peroxide between each take of Amy and Sheldon’s first kiss.
I rinsed with peroxide in between every kiss, every scene, every take, so that I wouldn’t get sick.
While that may seem like that remark was a slight at her longtime co-star, something that was going on with Jim at the time explained why Mayim was rinsing her mouth out.
As a part of Us Weekly’s article, they quoted Jim Parsons talking about what was going on behind the scenes during the filming of the memorable kiss.
In October 2022, Entertainment Weekly published an excerpt from “The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.” That excerpt revealed that Jim Parsons felt very strongly that Mayim Bialik needed to remain a part of The Big Bang Theory’s starring cast. “I remember saying to Todd, ‘I will not let this character go without a fight.’ That was notable for me, only in that I almost never disagreed with the writers. But at some point I felt a certain way about working with Mayim that I was like, If for whatever reason we seemed to be weaning her off of this show as a character, I would go and talk to them.”
A video on YouTube features a clip of the episode that featured Amy and Sheldon’s first real kiss. If fans pay close attention to Jim’s voice in the clip as he portrays Sheldon, he sounds like he was sick at the time that scene was filmed. While talking to the author of “The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series,” Jim revealed how sick he was while filming the kiss scene.
“I was sick with something, like a bad respiratory cold. And it was ironic because I always took care of myself, and here I am sick during one of the very rare times I have to kiss her. And kiss her several times because I knew we’d have to do several takes.”
While Jim referenced how sick he was while filming the scene, it was Mayim that really explained how ill her co-star was.

As unfortunate as it is that Jim was so sick, it certainly seems to have made filming that scene highly memorable for him and Mayim.
