The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has reaffirmed that all party membership registrations must be conducted at the ward level, in line with its constitution, and cautioned against ongoing irregularities in the registration process.
SDP National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, in a statement, said the current state of registration has become “haphazard and uncoordinated” prompting urgent intervention from the party’s leadership.
He cited Article 10.1(d) and (e) of the SDP Constitution, which explicitly states that registration must be conducted at the ward or through an official online platform — with all members being captured in the ward register, regardless of the mode of entry.
“The use of technology does not override the privacy and legality of ward-based registration,” Agunloye emphasised, adding that digital tools are meant to enhance, not replace, the ward-level process.
He clarified that as of now, no digital registration platform or website has been approved by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
The membership cards, he said, are to be obtained at ward offices pending the release of a newly designed card that will feature enhanced security against tampering and counterfeiting.
The NWC at its last meeting held on 20 March 2025, directed a nationwide streamlining of the registration process, and a circular to guide its implementation is expected to be released soon.
Agunloye appealed to party officials at both state and national levels not to complicate the situation or make it more difficult for new or intending members.
“I urge all members to bear with us,” he said. “Together, we will change the narrative.”
