Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has extended congratulations to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, following reports that both leaders have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, the Minister described their decision as both courageous and timely. Lokpobiri said the move reflects a broader recognition of what he termed the growing national acceptance of President Bola Tinubu’s leadership under the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.
He noted that the reported defection was more than a symbolic political gesture, but rather a reflection of the impact of the current administration’s policies across party lines. “This decision by Governor Oborevwori and Dr Okowa is not just politically symbolic, it is a testimony to the far-reaching impact of President Tinubu’s leadership,” Lokpobiri said. “It is a sign that across party lines, Nigerians are acknowledging the results-driven governance that is reshaping our country.”
The Minister also used the occasion to call on other political figures, particularly in the South-South region, to follow suit by supporting what he described as a vision for national development that transcends partisan divides.
“I call on other well-meaning leaders, especially in the South South, to rise above partisan interests and join hands with the President in delivering sustainable development to our people,” he added.
Lokpobiri reaffirmed his belief in President Tinubu’s leadership, describing the recent political realignment as an indication of a growing consensus for unity and economic progress.
The development, if confirmed, would mark a significant shift in Delta State’s political landscape, where both men have long been prominent figures within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
