The Chairman of Okehi Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State, Amoka Monday, has imposed a curfew across the council area due to alleged escalating security concerns.
The suspended senator from Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, is scheduled to hold a homecoming rally at the same time as the curfew.
Monday, in a statement, said the decision to enforce the curfew was necessary to maintain peace and order.
He also noted that the action followed directives from the Kogi State Government and the Kogi State Police Command.
Anyone found loitering or congregating in restricted areas without permission from the appropriate authorities will be arrested and prosecuted, Monday said.
He added that the decision to impose the curfew was “a proactive measure” to prevent any potential security breaches.
“The safety and security of our people are our top priority. We will not tolerate any actions that could compromise the peace and stability of our communities.” Monday noted.
Despite the ban, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s media office has confirmed that her scheduled visit to Kogi Central for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations will proceed as planned.
“We are pleased to confirm that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Sallah visit to Kogi Central senatorial district will proceed as planned,” Akpoti-Uduaghan’s team said.
“Despite rumours circulating online, there has been no official announcement from our office regarding the cancellation of this visit.”
The senator’s team also assured the public that arrangements have been made to ensure a peaceful and safe event for attendees, saying, “We would like to assure the public that all necessary arrangements are in place to ensure a successful and joyous event. We invite all members of the community to join us in marking this special occasion.”
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been a controversial figure in recent months, following her suspension from the Senate for alleged misconduct and sexual harassment claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
On March 26, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) notified her of a recall petition filed by some members of her constituency.
It was reported that 250,000 voters, more than half of the district’s registered voters, signed the petition.
