In what will come across as a really tragic development, two brothers have been reportedly killed by suspected militias on Friday, April 4, in Wapan Nghaku, a peaceful community in the Hospital Ward of Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State.
Daily Post reports that the victims, Masandi Moses Bulus and Mikhima Moses Basungyu, were reportedly tending to their farm, when they were attacked and killed.
It was observed that the tragic incident has left the victims’ family and the wider Wukari community in mourning.
Confirming the incident, the council chairman of Wukari, Dauda Agbu Samaila, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
Samaila, who also serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Taraba State chapter, said the council has been working in collaboration with security operatives to track down the perpetrators.
“My heart is heavy. These were hardworking young men whose lives were cut short in the most senseless and violent way,” the chairman said.
He disclosed that security agencies have been mobilized to investigate the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We must not allow this violence to continue. Our people deserve to live in peace, to work their farms, and to raise their families without fear,” he added.
The killings have reignited fears in a region with a troubled history of inter-communal violence.
Residents who spoke with our reporter recounted similar past incidents, including ambushes on travelers and the destruction of properties, all pointing to a persistent cycle of unrest that community leaders are eager to break.
Also disturbed by the development, Senator David Jimkuta, who represents Taraba South Senatorial District, condemned the attack during a condolence visit to the grieving families.
He described the murders as “a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of peace.”
“This is not just a crime against two individuals; it’s an attack on the soul of Wukari,” the Senator said.
He called on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively. “We must build a society where conflict is not resolved through the barrel of a gun but through dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect.”
In the aftermath of the tragedy, religious leaders, community elders, and civil society organizations are renewing efforts to promote peace and reconciliation among neighboring communities.
