Ex-minister urges Obi to shelve 2027 ambition for Tinubu’s re-election
A former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Chief Henry Ikoh, has called on the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to abandon any plans to run for president in 2027 in favour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Speaking at his country home during an Easter gathering with All Progressives Congress (APC) executives from the 17 local government areas of Abia State, Chief Ikoh argued that President Tinubu has demonstrated commitment to the South East and deserves a second term.
The APC chieftain, who is also the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, said the president’s achievements within the region make a compelling case for continued support. He urged party leaders and stakeholders to begin mobilisation at the grassroots level to secure what he described as a “landslide victory” for the APC in the 2027 general election.
“President Tinubu’s re-election is not just necessary—it is mandatory,” Chief Ikoh stated. “I urge Peter Obi to support Tinubu and wait for the turn of the Igbos. The president has carried the region along and is performing well in office.”
Chief Ikoh emphasised the importance of an aggressive membership drive to reposition the APC in Abia and ensure dominance in future polls. He also hinted at responding to mounting calls for him to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.
While expressing gratitude to grassroots leaders for their visit during the Easter celebrations, Ikoh advised stakeholders to build a strong, united party capable of securing future electoral success. He also used the occasion to reflect on the spiritual significance of Easter, urging party faithful to embody Christ’s teachings in their daily lives.
Several speakers at the event reiterated their support for Chief Ikoh and encouraged him to heed calls to join the 2027 governorship race in Abia under the APC banner.
