A recently held educational programme, aimed at enhancing the welfare of canine companions, was conducted for pet owners in Nellmapius.
The educational initiative dubbed “Rata Mpya Outreach” taught humane dog care practices in partnership with Sombhulula Services Organisation and Woodrock Animal Centre.
Sombhulula Services Organisation Advocacy and outreach manager Morongwa Malatji said the aim of the event was to raise awareness about dog care.
Malatji said the campaign targeted youngsters and children to teach them how to treat dogs as humanely as possible because it’s through treating animals correctly that they can develop empathy, which can be extended to fellow human beings.
According to Malatji, people living in townships and informal settlements do not have enough knowledge about taking care of a dog.
The Rata Mpya Outreach teaches the locals, especially children, who want to be dog owners.
The outreach was also aimed at helping prevent the spread of serious dog diseases.
Malatji said the youngsters were taught about the importance of deworming, taking care of ticks and fleas, including sterilisation.

The Rata Mpya Outreach brought almost everyone on board, including social workers to provide psychosocial support to youth and small kids who are dog owners as some come from vulnerable households and a dog is the only companion they have.
A total of 60 dogs received free rabies vaccinations.
The children who brought their dogs received leashes and bowls and the children were also treated to fruit, water, and sweets.
Malatji added this is the second dog awareness outreach they held in Nellmapius.
“We are appealing to people and children to start loving their dogs. “Dogs deserve our care and love.”
She added attendees would be educated on how to take care of their pets, good nutrition, shampooing and dipping and how to avoid kennel or chain stress.
The Rata Mpya Outreach will be visiting other areas in Mamelodi. The next campaign is being planned in the Nellmapius sports ground on April 19.
