As Nigeria’s political landscape is getting heated up ahead of the 2027 elections, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) finds itself at the center of a major political shake-up.
While El-Rufai’s entry into the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has generated buzz, SDP National Secretary Olu Agunloye remains unfazed, emphasizing that the focus should be on his contributions rather than mere celebration.
Reacting to speculation about El-Rufai’s political ambitions vis-à-vis his newfound love for SDP over APC, Agunloye said, “The key
issue is not about how to welcome or celebrate him but what he is bringing and what his motives and programs are.”
On concerns that have emerged with El-Rufai’s defection—about whether he and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has been rumored to be considering the same move, are eyeing the SDP as a platform for their 2027 presidential ambitions—Agunloye acknowledged the influx of heavyweight politicians but made it clear that the party’s vision would not be compromised.
“The big shots are coming, and more are preparing to come. If they mean well and want to address social insecurity, economic stability, and sustainable development, we will do well together.
“But if their goal is just grabbing power or conspiring against individuals, their mission will fail, and they could crash the SDP
platform.”
On speculation that the SDP could follow the APC’s 2015 playbook by evolving into a mega party through mergers and alliances, Agunloye dismissed the comparison, emphasizing that the SDP is focused on building a strong, independent political force.
“The evolution of APC is different. We have no interest in that system. However, an SDP that can manage itself well amidst an avalanche of high-profile politicians, with a clear focus on good governance, can win the 2027 election at both federal and state
levels.”
With the political landscape shifting, the SDP is emerging as a potential power broker. The big question remains: Is this the dawn of a formidable alternative or just another battleground for political heavyweights seeking a new platform?
