One official killed as NCoS recaptures 5 Kogi prison escapees

The Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) has confirmed that one of its personnel has been killed during the recent jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.

The spokesperson for the NCoS, Abubakar Umar in a statement also said that out of five inmates who escaped during the jailbreak incident, three of them have been recaptured.

According to Umar, some inmates managed to escape after successfully tampering with the padlocks of the facility.

He said the incident took place in the early hours of Monday, March 24.

Umar said a manhunt was immediately launched for the escaped inmates while the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi ordered the mobilisation of personnel to secure the facility.

“So far, five of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining fugitives.

“Additionally, a security audit is being conducted across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent future occurrences,” Umar said.

He assured that efforts are being made in collaboration with relevant security agencies to ensure that all the escaped inmates are rearrested and return to the facility.
