The South-South Zonal Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Blessing Agbomhere, has expressed concern over the growing criticism of Senate President Godswill Akpabio on social media.
Akpabio has faced intense backlash following the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central District.
The Senate imposed the suspension without pay, citing a breach of its Standing Orders after Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, an allegation he has denied.
In a statement released in Abuja on Friday, Agbomhere defended Akpabio, describing the widespread criticism as unwarranted.
He argued that the negative sentiments against the Senate President were part of the challenges faced by great leaders in the course of public service.
“Vilifying the third highest-ranking citizen of Nigeria based on unsubstantiated allegations is unfair and reflects a society where political opponents routinely use a pull-him-down strategy against leaders in office,” Agbomhere stated.
He further urged Nigerians to view the allegations with scepticism, particularly as the country marked International Women’s Day.
According to him, the claims against Akpabio were not rooted in justice or gender inclusion but were instead a calculated attempt to undermine his leadership.
“We warn fifth columnists bent on bringing down the Senate President to remember that what goes around comes around. What leaders need at this critical juncture in Nigeria’s history is support, not attacks and betrayal, especially from once-trusted friends and allies,” he added.
