Metro police issue nearly R50k in fines to businesses in the west

Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officers recently issued R48 000 worth of fines during a series of business by-law inspections in Saulsville.

The inspections took place on March 7 and were supported by the SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, health inspectors and Department of Home Affairs officials.

“During the operation, 17 businesses were inspected. Only six businesses complied, and 11 businesses were issued with non-compliance fines from TMPD and health inspectors,” said TMPD spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba

Four businesses were closed down and goods were confiscated.

Among the stores closed was a supermarket at Nkomo Village Mall in Atteridgeville.

Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya said the store had fallen foul of city by-laws’ operational compliance on three previous occasions.

“We get worried when big businesses don’t follow the law, placing profits ahead of public health. They were even given a final notice to fix certain things. This started in September last year and we’re in March now and they have not complied,” Moya said.
“Secondly, they do not have the certification of acceptability. Obviously, as a shop that deals with food, that certificate is a requirement for them to handle food. So we are closing them down and that comes with certain regulations. As soon as they adhere to them, they will be reopened,” she said.
