The Rivers Restoration Movement (RRM) has issued a stern warning to Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, urging him to obey the Supreme Court ruling or face impeachment.
In a statement signed by Johnson Georgewill, Director General of RRM, and Mrs. Sarima Akpata, Secretary of RRM, the group hailed the Supreme Court’s recent judgment as a “huge victory for truth and justice.”
The RRM leadership congratulated the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, on their “well-deserved victory” at the Supreme Court.
The group expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court justices, led by Justice Emmanuel Agim, for “cementing the power of the judiciary” and upholding the rule of law.
However, the RRM alleged that Governor Fubara’s administration has a history of disobeying valid court rulings and warned that “the day of reckoning for all betrayals is close.”
The RRM took issue with the project commissioning set to begin on Monday, March 3, 2025, calling it “illegal, vexatious, and a clear sign that Governor Fubara has chosen to continue disobeying valid court rulings.”
They questioned the source of funding for the project, given that the 2024 and 2025 budgets are allegedly illegal.
They said: “The project commissioning set to begin by Monday, March 3, 2025, is illegal, vexatious, and a clear sign that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has chosen to continue disobeying valid court rulings because the judgment was clear that the Rivers State Government should not spend a dime without appropriation. So one begins to wonder where funds will be gotten from for this 10-day government function when we all know the 2024 and 2025 budgets are all illegal.”
They called on the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and his members to “rise up and defend democracy” by ensuring that all illegal appointments, spending, and actions by the state government are halted until a proper budget is presented.
The group urged the Assembly to wield the power of impeachment if Governor Fubara continued to act illegally.
They added: “We are calling on Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule and his Assembly members to rise up and defend democracy in Rivers State because only they have the constitutional mandate to act in partnership with the Nigerian police.
“The time has come for us to ensure all illegal appointments, spending, and actions by the Rivers State Government are halted until a proper budget is presented. The 10th Assembly should also not hesitate to WIELD THE BIG STICK OF IMPEACHMENT if the Governor continues on the path of illegality because we know the statewide budget was completely watery as regards the main issue of budget presentation.”
Finally, they appealed to all leaders in Rivers State, including clergy, politicians, opinion leaders, and traditional rulers, to stand up for the truth and advise the Governor to respect democracy.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to opposing all betrayals and illegal actions by the state government, stressing that “truth and justice will always reign supreme.”
