The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a call to action to address the pressing issue of water security and conservation. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof Joseph Utsev, emphasized the need for deliberate actions to ensure water security, local water conservation programs, and water-saving practices.

Speaking at a press briefing to commemorate the 2025 World Water Day, Utsev noted that Nigeria is tackling challenges in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) by implementing various initiatives. These include the Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene, the National Action Plan for WASH, and the Nigeria Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene Programme.

The minister stressed that sustainable water security requires partnerships at all levels of government, private sector, development partners, and communities. He called on stakeholders to support initiatives that enhance Nigeria’s water security and contribute to peace and development.

The United Nations World Water Development Report, titled “Mountains and Glaciers – Water towers,” was also launched during the event, highlighting the importance of preserving glaciers and mountains as vital water sources.
