The lawmakers of the House of Representatives have ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to restrict citizens from visiting pornographic websites.
Speaking on the floor of the House, Dalhatu Tafaki, a lawmaker from Katsina state, in a motion said it would be of great importance to the nation should all website hosting obscene and pornographic content be blocked in the country.
According to Tafaki, unrestricted access to such content among Nigerians is eroding on the societal and moral values of citizens.
Also, referencing warnings from psychologists and sociologists, Tafaki submitted that young people have over time become addicted to this content.
He cited cases countries across Africa, the Middle East and Asia where these laws are enacted.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists worldwide have issued strong warnings about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of consuming pornographic content,” Tafaki said.
Supporting Tafaki’s motion through a voice vote approved by the Speaker of the House, the lawmakers agreed that Nigerians but be protected by curbing the access to these kind of content.
The lawmakers also directed the NCC to, as a matter of urgency ensure compliance by telecommunication companies and impose penalties on providers that fail to comply with the directive.
