The Abia State Government on Tuesday demolished a building in Osisioma Local Government Area that had been used as a kidnappers’ hideout. The action affirms the administration’s commitment to eradicating crime and serves as a stern warning to property owners.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, addressed journalists in Umuahia, expressing concern over landlords who prioritize rent collection over tenant verification. He emphasized the necessity for property owners to conduct thorough background checks and maintain accurate records to prevent their premises from being exploited for illicit activities.

“The state government will not hesitate to demolish any house used for kidnapping,” Kanu asserted, urging residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies promptly.

This demolition follows a recent police operation resulting in the neutralization of six suspected kidnappers, the rescue of four victims, and the recovery of weapons, including two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 32 rounds of live ammunition.

Governor Alex Otti reinforced the administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards criminal hideouts, ordering the complete demolition of the implicated property and vowing to prosecute its owner. “Any landlord who allows criminals to use their property is as guilty as the criminals themselves,” Otti declared.

He also directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to collaborate with local traditional rulers to ensure communities remain vigilant against suspicious individuals.

The government’s decisive actions mirror the importance of community involvement and responsible property management in the fight against crime in Abia State.
