The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has said that it is only the people from the Southeast region of Nigeria that can offer the president the lifeline needed to win the 2027 presidential election.
Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Deputy President General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo said it has become clear that the Northern part of the country has ditched the president and his ambition to be re-elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued on Monday, March 24, Isiguzoro said the North can no longer be appeased to secure such a partnership that existed between the president and the region before the 2023 presidential election.
He warned that available evidence show that the North has distanced itself from the president’s ambition while actively forming alliances with leaders from the Southeast and the Niger Delta region.
Isiguzoro said, “The candid truth must be conveyed to President Tinubu: unless critical federal government policies are rapidly reversed, and the requisite corrective measures implemented with the utmost urgency, the suffering populace of Nigeria will likely resonate with the sentiments being propagated by the coalition of opposition politicians, predominantly led by Northern leaders, to effect a change in leadership in the impending 2027 elections.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo earnestly advises the Federal Government to reassess its strategies. A critical step in this process is the demystification of the Northern region through a credible National Census exercise in 2025. This exercise must incorporate robust provisions for the inclusion of ethnicity and religious identity,” he said.
He further urged those close to Tinubu to ensure the president, through key government agencies, prioritise the needs of the Igbo people as a catalyst to forming solidarity with the region.
He also listed some key projects that could be embarked upon by the FG including the full utilization of the Port Harcourt Seaport, the construction of a deep seaport in Azumiri (Ukwa East LGA, Abia State), the upgrading of the Port Harcourt-Aba-Enugu-Maiduguri railway among many others.
“As the landscape shifts and political allegiances realign, it is imperative that President Tinubu recognizes the pivotal role that the Igbo Nation can play in restructuring Nigeria’s future,” Isiguzoro added.
He noted that only an earnest engagement and commitment to the people of the region will expedite the needed political affiliation.
