Former Vice Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Foud Oki, has called on the leadership of the party in the state to consider it the right and appropriate time to stop all the media brickbats and shenanigans surrounding the removal of the immediate past Speaker of Lagos House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
He said the controversies surrounding the removal of Obasa, if not stopped and the party faces the real business of governance and ensuring that dividends of democracy are delivered to the citizens of the state, may pose a danger to the party.
In a letter addressed to the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), led by Tajudeen Olusi and entitled: ‘Re: Lagos Speakership: It’s time to stop all shenanigans surrounding the change in leadership saga’, Oki said: “I urge you to consider the implications of prolonging this discord. Let us not allow our internal disagreements to overshadow the greater goal of serving the people of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole. The strength of our party lies in our ability to adapt, listen, and unite for the common good.”
Oki said that Obasa’s removal might have come as a surprise to many, and it is evident that very few members of the leadership and indeed the party membership have feelings of discontent regarding how it was executed, adding:
“It is important to acknowledge that perhaps there were missteps in engaging with party leadership before this decision. However, we must recognise that the decision has been made, and it stands as a fait accompli.
“In light of this, I appeal to your compassion and wisdom to allow the legislature the independence it deserves. We must not allow this situation to further polarize our party, which is already grappling with internal cohesion.
“It is time for us to move forward. It is crucial to recognise that the decision made by the Lagos legislature has garnered significant support from various sectors of the society, including traditional, social, and human rights communities.”
