Pretoria soccer coaches undergo workshop to improve skills

Local soccer coaches from Mamelodi Local Football Association attended a 10-day workshop to gain more experience, which started on February 19 at the office’s Central sports ground.

The workshop is an introduction because there are a lot of regulations and coaches must have certain licences to coach.

President of South African Football Coaches Association, Gregory Mashilo said local coaches can’t even afford to pay to train as professional coaches or for a coaching licence.

Mashilo said the workshop was more like an introduction to coaching at a professional level.

“It is expensive to get a coaching licence but the workshop will assist them to know what is needed to become one and at the same time learning to become a professional coach,” said Mashilo.

The workshop was organised by the founder of the Dlalisa Moyeni Foundation, Bongaan Skosana who wanted his team to have professional coaches.

Mashilo said Skosana also invited all the local coaches to attend the workshop because he wanted the local teams to have the same experience and knowledge of coaching.

He said the workshop would be divided into two phases: during the first five days they would learn the basics and go back to the teams and in the second phase they would give feedback about their experiences.

“We will be teaching them about safeguarding players, logistics, rules and many more,” said Mashilo.

Among the group, the youngest coach is Simphiwe Skhosana (19) of the Dlalisa Moyeni Foundation.

“We want to develop the coaches especially the youth to have proper knowledge of coaching and what is needed to become a professional coach,” Mashilo said.
“We are not just grooming the coaches and players from a young age but preparing them mentally and physically.”

Dlalisa Moyeni Foundation believes there is a lot of talent in Mamelodi and that they can produce some of the best coaches in the country.
