To aid the Southeastern region of the country in combating political segregation, the Labour Party has declared its intention to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the region.
Since Nigeria transitioned to democracy in 1999, marking the beginning of the Fourth Republic, no Nigerian from the Southeastern region has become president or vice president.
Indigenes of the region have decried marginalisation and have agitated for secession.
The Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has, however, noted that the political party will support the region in the 2027 elections, as it did when it made Peter Obi its flagbearer for the 2023 Presidential Election.
Abure said that the party has no regrets about zoning the presidency to the Southeast and that it would wipe the tears of the Igbo.

“We decided that we are going to wipe the tears of the Igbos. And we powerfully and courageously did that in the 2023 general election. But I think that the Igbo must also go back to the drawing board,” said Abure.
While urging the indigenes of the region to be strong and united, he said that the Yoruba were once like the Igbo until they were able to capture power.
He advised Igbos to borrow a leaf from the Yoruba in their quest for political power.
“Over the years, students of history will agree that the Yoruba, at some point, were like the Igbo—doing it all alone—and they were unable to capture power.
“Before, during, and after independence, the Yoruba couldn’t make it to the presidency, but when they realigned, it was easy for them to achieve it. It is a lesson for the Igbo to learn.”
